Here at Victoria Whitelaw we are known for our elegant and timeless style, so it may come as no surprise that we love all things traditional when it comes to styling homes for Christmas. Here are some ideas to consider incorporating in your own traditionally styled Christmas.
Classic Colour
We always recommend our clients collect a base of neutral ornaments and decorations which allows you to add pops of colour or adapt your colour theme in years to come. Shimmering gold, silver, and bronze are the perfect metallics to start with. From this base you can then add in crisp white or traditional reds to adhere to the classic festive colour scheme of red and green.
Display your chosen traditional colour palette in a variety of textures and finishes including glass, glitter, wood, and textiles which will add depth and warmth. Continue your colour theme throughout the rest of your home in the way of traditional wreaths and garlands and matching cushions, throws and table runners which form part of your holiday-time collection.
Traditional tree
Opt for classic and elegant Christmas tree decorations you can use year after year. Masses of timeless round baubles in varying sizes make a good base to work with, combined with interesting shapes such as birds, angels, drops, snowflakes, pears, apples, and faux botanicals such as poinsettia. The key is to heavily decorate your tree for a wonderfully luxe look.
An abundance of sparkling fairy lights is what brings your tree to life. Tuck warm twinkling lights into the branches of your tree with Christmas giving you the perfect excuse to have them lit all hours of the day and night.
Matching accessories
Don’t stop at just an immaculately decorated tree this year. Continue the theme throughout your home with a bespoke door wreath and stunning garland on your mantle designed to perfectly complement your chosen palette. Have your door wreath styled with baubles to match your tree and complete with beautiful scented cinnamon sticks and dried orange slices. Finish your mantle styling with a traditional nativity scene, hanging stockings for each member of the family or clusters of glowing candles.
Festive botanicals
There are some traditionally festive botanicals that we turn to year after year. Firstly, we love potted poinsettia plants in velvety red or white. They are the ultimate in traditional Christmas style and they look superb abundantly potted en masse at your front door or make the perfect festive gift.
Holly and spruce are two types of foliage we order in abundance at Christmas and style through our holiday-time arrangements and table centrepieces. Beautifully scented Christmas lilies are a popular choice at this time of year and look stunning styled en masse in tall vases on the kitchen bench or at the entrance to your home.
Elegant dining
Continue the traditional festive theme to your dining table for an impeccably styled feast that your guests will always remember. A favourite design of ours which is sure to impress is a stunning thick garland of luscious pine styled down the length of the table and finished with clustered pillar candles. Another classic design for a long table is a timeless, elongated centrepiece of festive foliages studded with Christmas decor and fresh blooms, and topped with a group of tapered candles. Or if you have a round table, a wreath-shaped table centrepiece of festive holly, spruce and blooms to match your theme finished with a chunky candle in the middle.
A simple way to enhance your table styling is to finish each place setting with a festive napkin dressing designed to match your fresh table arrangement, such as a cluster of cinnamon sticks combined with a sprig of holly and tied off with a gold ribbon and name tag. Don’t forget the bonbons for a touch of traditional Christmas fun!
We would love to see you down at our South Yarra, Brighton, or Armadale stores which have been transformed into a Christmas wonderland with all the trimmings.
